Introduction
Hi, it’s Des here. I’m in Pittsburgh in the United States of America. I’m at Share 2019. I have the pleasure of being joined by 3 amazing individuals that I’m going to introduce in a minute. I’m catching up with Jason, thanks for joining me, Andrew and Matt or Matthew. So we’re going to talk about something called the ASE program, the Associate Software Engineer Program. It’s been run by Broadcom. It’s been run for a number of years, but this year in particular has been grown to yet another level, and your group of individuals have been brought to Pittsburgh to take part in the shared 2019 event in a fairly unique form of they shipped a whole bunch of you in here maybe if I start with you Andrew you can maybe just explain what the Broadcom ASC program is to start with, to give a little context to viewers so they know what we’re talking about, we can dive into what the journey has been like.
The ASE Program
The Broadcom ASC program is an all-expenses-paid vacation, I mean the training program for the summer where we are spending the summer in Pittsburgh. The program is designed to provide training related to how to succeed as a new member of the team, especially in the mainframe team. It offers a quick dive into a lot of technologies associated with mainframe, which is not typically covered in modern university programs. The program also involves learning from experienced co-workers and networking with peers. It’s a seven-week program that provides a great way to get a running start with going into a new technology with Mainframe, especially for individuals coming from a background of doing more object-oriented programming like C and Java.
The Vitality Program
The Vitality program is something that was established by Broadcom to address the challenge of finding the right hires for the jobs and positions that their customers are looking for. The program aims to train individuals with tech-related skills in mainframe areas, which are still very prevalent but not commonly taught in modern education. This program offers a base of education on the ZOS systems and everything that the individuals will be supporting so that they’re able to provide workers that are ready for customer positions and able to add value to their business.
Matt’s Journey
Matt shared an interesting story about how he came into the ASE program in a slightly different way. He didn’t come straight from school but had a job in the distributive area. He was initially hesitant about working in the mainframe but was encouraged by a friend who mentioned that they were looking for younger people with distributed system knowledge. This led Matt to join the ASE program and receive training in mainframe knowledge.
Highlights of Share 2019
