    Introduction

In this blog post, we had the opportunity to sit down with Brian Knauss, the founder and CEO of OWL, to discuss his experience with the Call for Code project. The Call for Code project is a global hackathon that aims to bring together developers from around the world to build software and hardware solutions to deal with emergency scenarios. Brian’s insights into the project and his journey from registration to winning the event are truly inspiring.

    A Passion for Innovation

Brian’s journey with the Call for Code project began when he received a call from a friend at IBM, inviting him to participate in the technology competition. As a seasoned participant in hackathons and meetups, Brian was immediately intrigued by the competition’s focus on addressing natural disasters and emergency situations. He found the competition well-architected and was impressed by the resources IBM had put behind supporting developers in building innovative projects.

    Joining the Call for Code

One of the key takeaways from Brian’s experience with the Call for Code project was the ease of getting involved. IBM’s seamless registration process and the active communication on Slack allowed Brian to connect with like-minded individuals, including members of his founding team. The platform provided a space for collaboration, idea-sharing, and team formation, ultimately leading to the development of their winning solution.

    Forming a Global Team

One of the most remarkable aspects of Brian’s journey was the formation of a global team with members from different locations. Despite never being in the same physical location until the final Call for Code event, the team leveraged technology to collaborate and innovate. This global approach not only allowed for diverse perspectives but also eliminated geographical biases in addressing emergency scenarios.

    Tackling the Puerto Rico Event

Brian and his team chose to focus their efforts on addressing the aftermath of the devastating Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Recognizing the widespread impact of natural disasters on communities, they developed the OWL platform and the DuckLink, a distributed network of devices, to provide essential communication and coordination in disaster-stricken areas.

    The OWL Platform and DuckLink

The OWL platform, acronym for “organization whereabouts and logistics,” serves as a comprehensive orchestration space for mapping, data analysis, and incident management during natural disasters. The DuckLink, on the other hand, is a battery-powered device with Wi-Fi and long-range radio capabilities, designed to provide essential networking connectivity in regions with compromised infrastructure.

    Deploying Innovative Solutions

Looking ahead, Brian and his team are focused on scaling their organization and leveraging open-source collaboration to continue developing new, inventive solutions for addressing emergency scenarios. Their commitment to innovation and their vision for leveraging technology to make a global impact is truly inspiring.

    Conclusion

Brian’s journey with the Call for Code project is a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and technology in addressing global challenges. His experience serves as a source of motivation for developers and innovators around the world to participate in initiatives like Call for Code and contribute to building solutions that can make a meaningful difference in the face of natural disasters and emergency situations.

In conclusion, the Call for Code project is not just a global hackathon, but a platform for driving positive change and leveraging technology for the greater good. We look forward to seeing the continued impact of Brian and his team’s work in the coming months and beyond.

Join the movement, get involved, and be part of the solution. Together, we can make a difference.

Stay tuned for more updates and insights from innovators like Brian Knauss as we continue to explore the intersection of technology and social impact.
