Hello, my name is Bill Mew. And I’m Des Blanchfield. I’m just recently back from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which I was covering live from the event. And, Des, you were covering it remotely from our studio in Australia. It was a great event. I believe that you were there in person last year whilst I covered it from the studio. So it was my turn this year.

    Main Highlights from the Event

    Day 1

    • Growth in the 4 years from now, Startup Conference
    • New focus on consumer devices
    • Interesting innovations like transparent laptops and flying drones

    Day 2

    • Focus on artificial intelligence and AI integration into everything
    • Less focus on infrastructure, more on public cloud adoption

    Day 3

    • Challenge of licensing of spectrum
    • Focus on private 5G networks and enhanced IoT

    The Emergence of Consulting Partners

We’re used to seeing the big brands of Huawei and Ericsson and Nokia. We’re used to seeing some second-tier brands of handsets. But there’s a continued emergence of consulting partners like Tata Communications, HCL, Wipro, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, who are coming from the design and consulting point of view, helping organizations design smarter networks and deploy private networks.

The Future of Cybersecurity and Privacy

The event also shed light on the challenges of cybersecurity and privacy in the telecommunications space. With the increasing threat of cyber incidents and the need for data privacy and compliance, organizations are looking for solutions to protect their networks and data.

    Cybersecurity

    • The need for preparedness and nimbleness to respond to cyber incidents
    • Lack of federal level privacy regulation in the US

    Privacy

    • The complexity of privacy regulations in the US
    • The need for a common standard for privacy and security

    New Developments from NTT DoCoMo

At the end of February, NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s leading mobile operator, made a significant announcement. With about 89 or 90 million subscribers, NTT DoCoMo is a key player in the telecommunications industry.

The Move to Public Cloud for Telco Infrastructure

During the event, there was an announcement that NTT DoCoMo has selected Amazon’s web services environment to deploy a nationwide 5G open radio access network or 5G O-RAN. This move to a public cloud environment for telco infrastructure is a significant shift and presents both opportunities and challenges.

    Opportunities

    • Easy, fast, rapid, low-cost deployment into infrastructure
    • Access to infrastructure that may not exist in their own telco cloud

    Challenges

    • Strategic and deployment roadmap around governance compliance
    • Data privacy and security concerns
    • Reliability and cost considerations compared to private telco cloud environments

In conclusion, the Mobile World Congress 2022 showcased the latest innovations and trends in the telecommunications industry. From the emergence of consulting partners to the challenges of cybersecurity, privacy, and the move to public cloud for telco infrastructure, the event provided valuable insights into the future of telecommunications.

Stay tuned for more updates and developments in the industry as we continue to explore the impact of technology on telecommunications.
