    Introduction

In this blog post, we will continue our discussion with Justin Mason, the Associate Director of Vendor and Operations at University of Canberra, as he shares the university’s journey with Commvault and their successful projects in disaster recovery and archive solutions.

    Disaster Recovery Challenge in 2013

    • University of Canberra was already a Commvault customer for about 10 years.
    • Identified the need for a more robust disaster recovery solution for 150 terabytes of data.
    • Previous backup strategy involved manual creation of backups on tapes and storing them offsite, leading to challenges and potential risks.

    Transition to Commvault and AWS

    • Reached out to Commvault and AWS for a more agile and automated solution.
    • Commvault and AWS collaborated to address concerns about reliability, cost effectiveness, and performance.
    • Tested the solution for a couple of months, encountered some bugs initially, but they were promptly resolved.
    • Performance exceeded expectations, with data transfer being 6 times faster than the previous method.

    Archive Solution in 2017

    • After the success of the disaster recovery solution, University of Canberra looked into replacing their tape library infrastructure with an archive solution.
    • Commvault’s advancements in supporting D-Dupe in the cloud made the transition to archive solution feasible and cost effective.
    • The use of block level object storage and Commvault’s data deduplication technology resulted in faster performance, with only deltas being transferred.

    Future Considerations

    • With the success of their disaster recovery and archive solutions, University of Canberra is now exploring other use cases with Commvault, including data analytics and security.
    • They are also considering Commvault’s hyperscale solution and looking into other vendors specializing in data analytics.

Networking and Collaboration at Commvault Go

    • Justin highlighted the value of networking with other educational institutions and the exchange of experiences and solutions.
    • He also expressed interest in exploring other technologies showcased at Commvault Go, particularly those related to data analytics and insights.
